The fall meeting of the SDCTE Executive Board was held in Mitchell, September 7th, with President Nancy Kampfe calling the meeting to order.

Other board members in attendance included Deana Brodkorb, Nancy Zuercher, Sharon Olbertson, Deb Knutson, and Dodie Bemis.

The minutes were approved as read, and the treasury had a balance of $376.31.  Dodie will send out membership renewal notices with the upcoming newsletter.

Deana and Nancy K. reported on their experiences with the Regional Affiliates Meeting in St. Louis. "Overwhelming, inspirational and awesome" are the summation of their narrative.  Deana gained lots of ideas for the newsletter, and Nancy shared ideas for increasing membership and serving the membership better.  Nancy also relayed advocacy issues and SLATE prospects.

The board voted to have Deana update the brochure.  They also encouraged board members to bring copies of the brochure to any meetings they attend and work on more personal contact with the membership.  It was also decided to send a literary map to members who renew their membership by November 1st.  Another incentive is a drawing for a Terry Redlin music box (which Dodie will donate) for those who bring a new member into SDCTE before December 10th.  Names of those who are eligible will be posted on the website.

Nancy K. will develop a survey of membership needs which she will include in the newsletter and post on the website.

Nancy Z. distributed flyers on the upcoming Border Conversations meeting on October 26th in Worthington, MN.  It is co-sponsored by the Dakota and Minnesota Writing Projects.  Deana will have an article in the September newsletter and Dodie will include a copy of the flyer in the next membership mailing.

Dodie updated the board on SDEA conference.  SDCTE has a full slate of programming and should be reimbursed $600 for its full scheduling.  Deana will take brochures to the conference to give to the other four presenters for distribution to attendees.

The by-laws need to be updated to reflect the addition of the Post-Secondary Liaison and the Website Master.  Dodie is to bring copies of the by-laws to the next meeting for the Board to make those changes.  Nancy K. also suggested that each of the officers write a clear job description for each officer/position on the Executive Board and publicize them in the newsletter and on the web site in an attempt to encourage others to get involved in SDCTE leadership.

Jennifer Mueller at Rapid City Central has been chosen as NCTE Young Leader.  Nancy K. will contact Jennifer to ask if she would like to serve on the Executive Board or at least attend a meeting.

Karen Harrington will try to get information about the SDCTE Spring Conference included in the state Administrative Memo.

Deana will have the September newsletter to Dodie by September 20th.  Everyone is to have their articles to Deana by September 13th.  Submissions include SDEA presentations, forms for Teacher of the Year and Author of the Year, promotion on membership, idea exchange, President's column, bloopers, a report from the regional affiliates conference, Young Writers contest and the Minnesota Writing Project.

The next meeting will be held November 2nd at 11:00 at the Twin Dragon in Mitchell.

Board members are to bring ideas for a conference theme, possible presenters, possible speakers, and roundtable topics.  A Call for Presenters will be mailed out following the meeting.
