Prairie Winds Reborn

Look for a double-length issue of Prairie Winds magazine in early May.  According to Kathy Huse-Wika, Project Director of Prairie Winds, the magazine will be a combined issue; a yearbook of approximately 80 pages, and will initiate a new format with all-new features and color art.

As usual, Prairie Winds combines student writing and teacher writing from South Dakota writers.  The new magazine will be especially appealing to teachers of writing, according to Wika.  "We've combined some incredible material from past issues with some great new work from regional authors.  The magazine will continue its focus on student writing, but will also be helpful to teachers who are looking for practical classroom applications."

The upcoming issue features a new article by Kathleen Norris, noted area author.  Also highlighted are two articles by Linda Hasselstrom, who offers "harsh advice to beginning writers" and an update piece on the use of journals.  Carol Varilek, a teacher-writer from Geddes High School, provides an article and new poems, as does Patty Litzel, whose work has been published in Leaning into the Wind (1997, Houghton Mifflin).

Each new issue of Prairie Winds is also slated to contain classroom activities from The Writing Book, published by Prairie Winds.  For more information on how to become a subscriber to the magazine, or how to obtain The Writing Book, contact Kathy at Prairie Winds Project, 108 E. Colorado Blvd., Spearfish, SD 57783.
