Ann Fishback from Brookings High School and Stephanie Smith from Sioux Falls Lincoln High School have been awarded this year's South Dakota Young Authors Award. As juniors, they were asked to submit one sample of writing (prose or verse), after which they wrote an impromptu theme under teacher supervision. This theme was submitted in longhand without revision. NCTE decides the topic each year. The quality of the writing submitted by these two individuals should make their English teachers proud of all the hours that went into helping their students develop their writing skills.
