English standards are being developed on a state as well as national level.  We will discuss these standards: what they are, how they were arrived at, how they will/can impact local curriculum efforts, what they do NOT mean for local decision making.

Workforce of the Future--Tech Prep Initiative--Dodie Bemis, Watertown High School.

When the class of 2000 graduates, knowledge will have doubled three times since they entered school; each graduate will be exposed to more information in one year than a person born in the early 1900's would see in an entire lifetime; hardly a job will exist that does not require computer skills and a command of technological systems.  How can we best educate and train this workforce of the future?

Directing for English Teachers--Kim Bartling, Sioux Falls O'Gorman.

This workshop will focus on basic directing for the teacher who may not have a strong theater background.  It will touch on selecting materials, scheduling, rehearsing and production techniques.

Empowering Students: Peer Response Groups and Portfolios--Linda Johnson, Sioux Falls.  Presider: Joy Schellar, SDEA Board Member.

How do English teachers balance a desire to empower students to find a voice and use writing in authentic ways along with answering the demands for accountability?  Workshop will address how to create a portfolio system and use peer response groups.  The project has been in place for 8 years.  Appropriate for several levels and disciplines.
