The institute will demonstrate: 1) selection and cutting, 2) casting, staging, and blocking, and 3) rehearsal.

Exploration of visual texts can enhance understanding of both print and visual texts, as well as allow fro creative and visual intelligences. Whole language and reader-response strategies were adapted from Nancy Atwell, Robert Probst, Linda Rief, and Peter Elbow and transferred readily to other visual texts, such as painting, advertising, and photographs. By reflecting on their "pathways to literacy," teachers and students can learn to appreciate the individual differences and various experiences which lead to their particular way of "knowing" how to read and write. Teachers can gain much information, also, about children's attitudes toward literacy activities. This session will show how to conduct such a metacognitive activity with students. Participants will be actively involved in rediscovering their personal pathways to literacy through sketching, writing, reading, and sharing. (General)
Writing Lives: Biography for Young Readers

The presentation will be based on my experience as the writer of seven published juvenile biographies and as a college professor in the field of children's literature. Topics to be covered: values of biographies for young readers, changes that have occurred in the history of this genre, current trends, and controversies in the field.
