This issue of
English Notes features articles on writing theory and literary analysis.
Several of the articles were written by participants of the Mellon Institute held last summer at Augustana College.
These center on criticism of midwestern literature: My Antonia, Giants in the
Earth, and Main Street. Margaret Quintal reviews Edwin Mullins' book
The Painted Bitch, an analysis of the biased male view of women in literature,
and Bonnie Harens describes the dangers of imposing religious attitudes in the classroom.
In the writing category, William Bogard and Thomas Maik both describe
the effective use of the computer in their articles. And finally, William Bogard and Thomas Herbeck present a visual guide for teaching
structure in composition classes.
We thank the contributors to this issue.
Without you, of course, there would be no English Notes. We also urge readers who have ideas for
articles to get them down on paper and submit them for next spring's issue.
