FROM THE EDITOR

The most recent NCTE Council-Grams noted that among affiliate journals during 1983 several had much success in garnering articles from out of state, including Indiana English with four and the Southeastern Ohio Council's FOCUS with eight.  I was a bit surprised that English Notes was not mentioned since our 1983 issue had six articles from outside South Dakota--New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Louisiana, Iowa, and Ohio--as well as seven home grown articles.  Because of South Dakota's ruralness, I believe it is imperative that English Notes solicit articles from outside the state; however, I also feel that teachers in South Dakota have much to offer their colleagues both in and out of state.  Therefore, I will continue to seek quality articles from outside our state, but I want to encourage all South Dakota teachers to submit articles and ideas to English Notes and to out-of-state journals.  If you have an article that you would like to submit to an out-of-state journal, get in touch with me as I have a list of all NCTE affiliate journals.

This issue of English Notes has articles from California, Minnesota, the NCTE (does this one count as an article from Illinois?), and, most importantly, from all sections of South Dakota--Aberdeen, Yankton, Mission, Spearfish, and Rapid City.  The topic, "The Relationship Between Literature and Writing," was one which I wasn't sure we would get many articles.  Six good articles on the topic has changed my mind.  There are also two articles, while not specifically related to literature and writing, which should have more than a passing interest to English teachers; one is on visual literacy and the other on the computer and writing.

I want to thank the contributors to this issue of English Notes, for it is their contributions which make the journal successful.  I also want to thank Anne Colombe for her patience and typing.  Once again, though, I encourage you to submit an article to English Notes so that I may thank you in this space next year.
