You are in for a rare treat when you attend the October 6-7 SDEA Professional Development
Conference at the Ramkota River Centre in Pierre. Among the over 90 presentations available to
conference goers will be six by members of SDCTE. All of the SDCTE sessions will be
presented in the Lewis & Clark Room so there will be no conflicts; you can attend every session!

Friday, Oct. 6 2:00-2:50 pm Writers of the Dakota Territory: Teaching with a Web-Based Textbook
Presented by Debra S.
Knutson, Assistant Professor of English at Dakota State University in Madison, this session will
demonstrate the web-based textbook for a class in South Dakota literature which Deb
created using a Governor William Janklow Teaching With Technology Grant. The session will also explore the advantages and disadvantages
of using a web-based textbook instead of a traditional print textbook.
Friday, Oct. 6 3:00- 3:50 pm Using the Reading-Writing Workshop to Teach American Literature
Participants in this session will engage in reading-writing workshop
strategies as they explore ways in which student engagement with the literature in the required American Literature semester of junior English
increases as more student choice is allowed. Handouts will also be provided by presenter Nancy Kampfe, Junior-Senior English and
Journalism teacher at Bennett County High School, Martin.
Friday, Oct. 6 4:00 -4:50 pm Making the Connection: Integrating Academic Standards into Hands on Learning
Attend this session to see how South Dakota has used the Crosswalk
Process to integrate the state academic standards into hands-on learning. Receive a copy of the activities manual which has been
compiled from tried and true lesson plans of active practioners throughout the state.
Presenter is Dodie Bemis, NESD Tech Prep Coordinator, LATI, Watertown.
Saturday, Oct. 7 8:00- 8:50 am Character Analysis/Multi-Genre Paper
Participants will walk through two exciting concepts presenter Karen
Harrington, language arts instructor at Mitchell Senior High School, gathered while attending the NCTE Spring 2000 Conference in New
York. These two projects foster students' creativity while enabling them to show their understanding of text.
Saturday, Oct. 7 9:00- 9:50 am Cutting Down the Paper Load: How NOT to be Correcting Papers Every Weekend
Are you addicted to correcting papers? Can't sleep? Can't relax? Does your red pen suffer seizures if it doesn't put on 25,000 comments per week? If so, then you need to attend this session to learn the 12-step program to overcome this affliction. Presented by Sharon Olbertson, language arts instructor at Beresford High School.

language arts instructors, have five years experience teaching in block scheduling.
