Roger Ochse (pronounced "oaks") is the new vice-president of SDCTE. He is Director
of Writing and assistant professor at Black Hills State University and has been a
presenter at several SDCTE meetings.
His areas of expertise include psychology and pedagogy
of writing; developmental and basic English; professional and technical communication; critical
thinking; research methodologies; history and structure of English; and collaborative
learning.
In the last five years he has taught American literature, English literature,
technical communication, written communication, introductory literature, and grammar
for the English teacher.
His research and scholarly work has appeared in
The Write Connections, English Leadership Quarterly, Research in the Teaching of
English, ERIC, and Proceedings of the BHSU Research and Scholarly Work
Symposium.
He has presented at national and international conferences, including
the Association for Business Composition and Communication and the International
Conference on Critical Thinking. In South Dakota he has presented for the South Dakota
Humanities Council, the South Dakota Education Association, and the South Dakota
Council of Teachers of English. He has been a frequent presenter at Black Hills area
organizations, covering such diverse topics as "English Only?" "The Romantic Legacy,"
and "Is Writing Dead?"
In the classroom he is known as a friendly but demanding instructor who
encourages students to take charge of their own learning.
