"Close Read and Socratic Seminar: Enlarging the Ideas"

Using samples from ninth grade and senior AP students, Connie will show how her students responded to an introduction to the concepts of close reading and Socratic seminars.

"Use It or Lose It!  The Latest in Brain-Compatible Learning"

Learn about the latest applications of brain research to the classroom.  Learn the answers to a variety of questions: What is the Mozart Effect?  How important is breakfast to learning?  What factors affect student motivation?  How important is the role of the emotions in learning? Topics include curriculum design, motivation, assessment, nutrition, music, and much more.  Information is of immediate use to teachers, students, administrators and parents.

"The Essay Exam: Teaching It, Preparing It, Grading It Efficiently"

This session will: suggest methods for teaching students how to create their own questions and how to write an essay exam; provide examples that assess knowledge and the ability to synthesize materials; suggest methods for grading essay exams efficiently and fairly.

"Understanding Echoes: Sharing the Load Through Writing and Conversation"

We will show how colleague journaling and informal discussions help to increase cohesiveness among language arts staff, break down walls of isolation, and build bridges across grade levels.  Session will feature discussion of issues important to English teachers everywhere.

"Digital Dakota Network: V-Tel Conferencing"

Technology demonstration sponsored by the Office of Technology at DECA to help schools find ways to use the new two-way video/audio equipment donated to SD schools by US West.

"Using Inspiration to Write Across the Curriculum"

Robin will demonstrate Inspiration, a computerized informational tool which helps students assemble their ideas into logical formats and visuals to see how their ideas fit together.  Robin will show how this software can be used across the curriculum to teach students how to organize their ideas, regardless of the discipline for which they are writing.  NOTE: This session will be held in the Mitchell High School computer lab so that each participant will be able to experience the program at his/her own pace and preference.

Writing can be used for learning in every classroom and at every level.  This session will model that premise and teach you how to use a powerful tool for learning: the double-entry notebook.

"Literature Online: Using the Web to Teach Regional Literature"

By demonstrating Writers of the Dakota Territory, a textbook developed for a selected authors course at Dakota State, Deb will illustrate the advantages and disadvantages of working with an electronic textbook as the primary text in a literature class.
