Online Books

  • A+ Research & Writing for High School and College Students, by Kathryn L. Schwartz (1997), is available through the Internet Public Library.

  • Elements of Style, the first edition of William Strunk, Jr.'s classic book on writing with style, is available online through Bartleby.

  • OWLs

OWLs (online writing labs) are university-sponsored sites where students can seek help from tutors.  Although most universities' OWLs have limited funding and can only offer tutoring service to their own students, many also provide handouts that are useful--and free--for everyone with web access.  Depending on the OWL, handouts may cover a variety of topics, including invention, development, organization, documentation, proofreading, grammar, and punctuation.  Some particularly useful OWLs include:

  • Dartmouth College's Composition Center

  • Purdue University's OWL

  • Rensselaer's Writing Center

  • University of Illinois' Writers' Workshop

  • University of Michigan's Sweetland Writing Center

  • University of Texas at Austin's Undergraduate Writing Center

  • To find other OWLs, visit the Online Writing Center Consortium, a forum designed for educators involved with writing centers and writing-across-the-curriculum programs.
